In January 2019, in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, FlexJobs conducted a Work-Life-Relationship survey that asked over 1,200 respondents a variety of questions about how their work life impacts their mental and physical health, relationships, stress levels, work-life balance, and more.

According to the results, flexible work arrangements not only have a positive effect on personal health and well-being, but romantic relationships as well. Management was also found to play a role in influencing the work-life balance of employees.

Here are some of the most interesting results:

People overwhelming said that having flexible work options would help them be better in so many ways—better friends, better parents, better pet owners, better spouses and partners. And at the top of the list: better to themselves!

• 89% thought a flexible job would help them take better care of themselves.
• 87% said it would create more time to spend with family or friends.
• 81% thought it would help them be a better spouse, partner, or significant other.
• 76% thought it would help them be more available to their friends.
• 61% of those with children (or plan to have children someday) thought a job with work flexibility would help them be a better parent.
• 55% of those with pets said having a flexible job would help them be a better pet owner.

Have you ever thought your boss’s own approach to work-life balance either helped or hindered your own? You might be right!

• Only 9% of survey respondents say their boss’s work habits make work-life balance easy for them.
• 36% said their boss doesn’t model good work-life balance

Flexible work can also make a positive impact on people’s health and wellness:

• 97% of people who say they have mental health issues believe a flexible job would help.
• 88% believed it would decrease their levels of stress.
• 70% say work has conflicted with their efforts to take care of their health.
• 69% thought it would increase the frequency they exercised.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, respondents said flexible and remote jobs could impact their romantic relationships in the following ways:

• 60% said it would benefit their romantic relationship, and another 19% were hopeful it would.
• 50% thought it would increase time available for dates or date nights.
• 39% said it would improve their sex life, and another 23% were optimistic it would.

12 Flexible and Remote Jobs to Help with Work-Life Balance

We’ve dived into the FlexJobs database to find current listings that demonstrate some of the most widely available flexible and remote jobs. According to our survey respondents, 100% remote work remains the most popular choice for flexible work (83%) for the fourth year in a row, with flexible schedules a second preference (60%), followed by part-time schedules (40%) and freelance work (34%).

Digital Marketing Project Manager

Full-Time, Freelance Job; Mason, OH

Will translate business needs into multi-channel marketing campaigns. Must have a bachelor’s degree, two years of experience with digital projects, and email/SMS campaign experience. Full-time, 11-month contract paying $38-$44/hour.

English Teacher

Part-Time, 100% Remote Job; Work from Anywhere

Teach school-aged Chinese students English courses in an online setting. Use multiple props and collaboration tools. Requires a bachelor’s degree and reliable Internet. Work from home part-time. Six-month renewable contract.

Managing Editor
